If only he’d connected a little better with that hit, would have been one of the more sensational moments in recent times.

Hits a six off the last ball (by Chetan Sharma) to win the Australasia Cup Final at Sharjah 1986

While I don’t recall actually watching this at the time (unlike the Benson and Hedges Final), I pretty much remember what it meant to the way I’d look at India-Pakistan encounters years later. With that one hit, Miandad changed the mental balance of the Indian fan whenever India took on Pakistan, until maybe when Tendulkar arrived.

As for Chetan Sharma, it’s quite tragic now seeing what he went through. But if I’m really honest, I couldn’t help but snigger when I first watched this interview. I don’t think any Indian born in the 80s has ever forgiven him, despite growing up and later realizing it wasn’t really his fault.

Rather than focussing on the brilliance of Miandad, years later, (long after Chetan had retired) we’d be playing on the street, and anyone who was bowling rubbish, would be the “Chetan Sharma” of the team. Heck, we’d even imitate his Mark II bowling action (after his return from trauma) with the bobbing head, whenever we were looking for some fun.

India won the Benson & Hedges World Championship of Cricket (1985- Australia)

This was the first cricket match I ever watched. Was too young to remember anything much other than getting all excited because everyone around seemed happy – a joy that lasted for about a year until the Miandad last ball six.

Other watchable stuff in the clips include:
Someone called Qasim Umar firing his bat at probably Indian fans giving him a hard time.
Someone suffering a horrific looking injury – is that Rameez Raja?

Shastri was Man of the Series for being “cool as a cucumber whose sheer presence in the middle calmed the dressing room, while he sent a few to the boundary like a tracer bullet.” And for all that, he won himself an Audi car which was as much talked about as the Indian win. Unsurprising, since India at the time had about 3 brands of cars on its roads.
